Upgrades UI and new VFXs! (Devlog #47)

Final Upgrades UI

For a long time, my upgrades shop (called gear, in the game) was set as a list of things to buy. Then it hit me that it made no sense to be like that since each item represents different levels of one upgrade.

After some research, here's the before and after:

I have to say I quite liked the result. I am still a bit annoyed by the size of the icons. I think they are a bit too small for my taste, but if no good solutions come up, I'll leave it as is.

New Boss VFX

I have an internal VFX system that allows me to play VFX similar to how I can play sound effects. It's easy to hook up a new one and trigger a VFX. Up until now all the VFXs I had were made with Unity's Animators and spritesheets.

I had this nice smoke animation, made with Unity's particle effects that I wanted to include, so I updated the code to allow VFXs with Animator or the Particle System. It took me around 2 hours to change the system I had so I think it was worth it since I plan on using this VFX system in future projects.

Japanese translation

As I mentioned, since the game is set in Japan, I always wanted to have it localized in Japanese. It is another cost that adds up to the game, but I want to do it the right way.

Most of the strings have already been translated. Since the dialogues are more specific I am working with a more experienced translator. I plan to have it all translated by the end of the month.

Closing

For small wins, I have updated all the screens in the game to the new UI style. Most of the HUD has also been updated, except for the boss HUD. I have also removed a lot of icons that are no longer being used. I started optimizing some of the assets that are going to be used so the final game size decreases. Last but not least, I renamed a bunch of VFX and audio files I had so the naming was consistent.

For the next month, I will continue adding new icons that are still missing. Finish the boss HUD. And most importantly, finish the Japanese translation.

Once again, if you like Yurei or know someone who may like it, wishlist it on Steam. It helps a lot with the project.
